There is an active thread over on the OC regarding the manufacture of a batch of GRP ST205 tailgates for around £125. These are really oriented towards competition spec vehicles as they do not have any glass and the OEM gas support struts would be far too powerful for a light GRP hatch. You will have to fit brackets and a polycarbonate type rear screen. These are available from third party suppliers for around £150. Total cost is thus around £300. I have put my name down for one as has our VP so hopefully it will happen :)

mmm... very interesting...

How much is lighter in total weight (tailgate + brackets + polic. screen) ?

I actually have my name down for the 185 as well.

Those that don't have access to the OC forum and are interested please PM me.

Thing is, iirc there are FRP/CFRP tail gates available for the 6th gen from the states but they cannot cope with the WRC wing, it would rip right out the frame. Can these ones take it?

I wouldn't sacrifice the handing advantages of the wing for lightening the rear end tbh.

Where's the thread on this on OC? Pat Chinshue was looking for a rear boot lid and it may be of interest to him.

Here's an extract from the post.
Quote:
i got a phone call this afternoon about tailgates, they will make 205 and 185 as long as there are a minimum of 5 for each, they are not going to charge to make the molds which would be about £300 each! the cost of tailgates will be £125 each plus postage if you request it, he has told me they will take the forces on the spoiler, NOTE, the tailgates are only molded on the outside! this means you will need to modify or fit different hinges and clips or something to hold boot closed and probably modify boot seal, you will have to drill your own holes out for spoiler and any other bits you need to fit, they will leave about 50mm extra where the rear window fits so you can bolt in/glue/rivit a plastic window in, the gel coats colours are black white and grey ive seen the black and white and with a bit of elbow grease and polish and spit you should get them good enough not to need painting, you will NOT be able to use gas strutts and they will be to powerfull for the fibre glass tailgates.

Ok, which options we have for the policarbonate glass ?
Which is the best way to fit it to the tailgate ?

The tailgate can withstand the forces (downforce, DRAG  ) of the spoiler attached to it.

I think I'll pass on this, I'd rather lighten up the front end (first).

Bit of a change in plan as the guy who was originally going to do the tailgate has pulled out. New supplier has commenced production of the ST205 tailgate. He is also looking at dong GRP front wings for the ST205 after the run of tailgates
