A word of warning re bolt caps

They need to be filled with grease when fitted to work. Otherwise all they do is trap moisture against the thread.

Learned that the hard way with rigging screws on the boat

Exactly what I was about to say. Like the look of them though :)

Good idea Steve, I do have some suitable grease with which to fill them, I was wondering whether they would make them slide off really easily though.

I am sure I have one in store if you need one Marcus :) The stock airbox is much under-rated IMO. I'm sure I read somewhere the flat panel filter flows more air than an aftermarket cone filter AND draws the cooler air from outside the engine bay 8)

WOW!
There's certainly been A LOT of progress on this since I last checked the thread, but then it has been MANY months!
Looking forward to seeing the old girl again :)

Lucey - thanks, really looking forward to getting to drive it again - hopefully next weekend! :)

Marcus - it is indeed your airbox - thanks very much. Randomly I also found the original one from the car which I didn't realise I still had, it was a bit more scratched than yours so I still have it.

good to know it still lives on in your car.

don, my engine/gearbox is out of the car at the moment so an airbox is the least of my concerns! :D May be in the market soon however.

Mike, you still not going to be able to make rallydays?

Yeah unfortuantely I can't make RallyDay. I'm off to the Netherlands on the same weekend.

In other news - IT LIVES!!!

I've driven 50 miles in the car today, not pushing too hard but not being too gentle either. It's also had an oil change as well.

I'll update with some pics over the weekend but it feels really strong, and its great to drive something again that has some character. :)

Good stuff guys, I presume all was well with the first oil change with no sign of anything to worry about. Did this include a filter change as well?

Yep changed the filter and the oil was as expected.

The car has also just had its MOT and I'm not just getting the road tax :)

Update with a few pics from the weekend.

Friday morning started well with a final check of things and then a first start-up!

Image

Here is a video of the first proper startup -
Image

Martin then sent me out for just a few miles and then return to the garage to check all levels etc.

Once that was complete I was then spent a little bit of time plumbing in the sensors to the datalogger unit, this is only temporary at the moment until I decide on a final position.

Image

I also fitted some little covers I found for the suspension turrets, these hide the shiny TEIN coilovers which are underneath and also stop road grime entering the engine bay via a hole present due to the alignment settings on the topmount.

Image

I then went for a further drive putting 50 miles on the car before returning to the workshop and doing an oil and filter change, this was done and the engine refilled. I then took the opportunity to plumb in the boost controller so I could use a little more boost as without the VSV in place the actuator is only providing about 0.7bar.

That wrapped things up for Friday, I celebrated this huge milestone on Friday night with a curry and some beers :D

Saturday morning and it was time for the car to get its MOT, given that pretty much all the mechanicals are new this went though without any problems, I then jumped online and re-taxed the car so its now fully road legal again.

The rest of Saturday was spent with more running in, the workshop is ideally located in that the Yorkshire Dales National Park is only about 25 minutes drive to the North, this is an ideal proving ground in the the roads are quiet, fast, hilly and twisty. Lots of chances for shifting frequently through the gearbox and differing speeds and boost.

The weather was excellent, and I couldn't resist stopping at a nice spot to take a photo:

Image

A few things I've noticed so far:

1) It's very fast compared to my 118D! - should be obvious I know but it had been a long time since I've driven a GT-Four
2) The HKS 264 cams don't appear to have had any real detrimental effect on the low end performance, I haven't taken the car fully through the rev range yet however so no idea what the top end is like.
3) It feels really powerful and pulls hard even with quite low throttle input and boost.
4) The TEIN's seem quite compliant yet still plenty firm enough.
5) The new exhaust sounds fantastic but it is quite noisy - might have to do something about that.
6) It really needs a proper clean and polish!

Cheers :)

Great news Mike
The cams should mean it pulls hard to the redline. If only you'd spent the time researching some larger valves at a trade show of some sort..............

Sounds like the mop/da party is overdue. Maybe book a weekend for that and kicking the Elise in the guts once Don gets back and works out which way is up
