Hi,

2x45° is a little bit hard as i have plenty of space but yes it will be a solution in that direction

FMIC isn't a option, even it was oem on the gen.4, the new engine should look a little bit gen.3
you also should know that my decision was to use a WTA system after a few compares against FMIC

Hi folks,

did a little brainstorming the last few minuetes about the transmission and how i can do her something good......and came to this

Image

how are the thoughts about it, would it work or do i kill the gearbox

Interesting diagram of the Corolla WRC gearbox oil system and heat exchanger system. I guess Toyota must have found this additional gear oil capacity and cooling necessary to keep temps under control in WRC competition. I would have thought that the heat exchanger is overkill for road use? I'm not planning on using one on my track build but will monitor the gearbox oil temps closely.

Hi Don,

my seight opf thing is the same. you have a big ammount of oil in the whole gearbox which keep it cool, such water heat exchangers are pretty nice for road use it gaves a big abount of safety further more a overkill but against a air exchanger you are safe from low temps so the only way for me could be the oil to water system but i'am not sure about i'am safe from gearbox damages due to such a system if the box isn'T developed for it.....

you will run the car without any cooling system on the gearbox? i guess i missunderstand you

The current plan is to use an off the shelf oil cooler radiator. i. e. similar to the road car setup. I've sent your diagram to JEMS who are building the car to see what he thinks. A heat exchanger on the gearbox probably makes sense on a rally car in the snow but on a circuit car like mine I can always warm up the transmission with the car on the air jacks and in gear :D The Nissan Skyline team used to do that when they ran in the Australian Touring Car Championship.

The TTE cars used Secan heat exchangers which are aerospace quality items, nice if you can afford them. I did hear that they were no longer available? If you hear of any at a sensible price please let me know!

Er,
Is this not a completely different gearbox?

I don't see how it would work on the stock gearbox
If you pumped it through the cooler into the top of the reservoir, as logic would suggest, then all you end up with would be an overfull gearbox and an empty tank - unless you rely on the viscosity of the oil preventing it from draining out of the tank

If you pump it into the bottom then unless you seal the system there,s nothing to encourage it back into the GB through the cooler rather than out the breather. If you seal the system will the gearbox seals handle the pressure?

Maybe I've missed something?????

The gearbox in the Corolla WRC is probably an Xtrac unit and I would speculate from the diagram that the pump operates on a similar fashion to an engine dry sump system with a scavenge side to the gearbox oil pump which delivers the oil to the top of the tank and then the pump draws the oil from the bottom of the tank through the filter and then into the gearbox casing to lubricate the gear cluster.

That's what I assume but I'm now onto a second Primitivo so chances of me missing the point were high

Hi,

i understand, high jacked and lets go

they are available second hand and very expensive, the cheaper way is to design and built your own one, but i drop you a note if i find a cheap one

it is a X-trac and you are right, without a modification on the box i just fill it useless
meanwhile it looks to complex to built against the profit.....

Maybe silly question time as I've never really looked at the gear oil system.

Why not just use a heat exchanger in place of the standard cooler ?

The gearbox is designed to pump oil through a remote cooler, what's the difference as far as the gearbox is concerned if that cooler is surrounded with water ?

All that extra volume does is provide 'thermal mass' i.e. it takes longer to heat up rather than providing any more dissipation of heat (other than small amount radiating from the tank)

how did you link to the factory oil return fitting on the sump? Did you just weld an AN fitting on to it?

Looking at this for my car over the next couple of weeks and need to figure out if I buy the CNC'd adapter from KO racing or not.

Or if anyone else can recommend another aftermarket oil return fitting which can be used?

Hi,

thats right, a friend just welded a AN fitting on it, simple and works :)
