If you have spark and fuel then the only thing that would stop it firing would be timing/dizzy. You say you've changed the rotor, dizzy etc. Did you disturb the timing when you did this? There have been a few cases of dizzy/rotor failure due to old age.

Could be possible timing fault but doesn't the rotor arm have a notch and can only be fitted one way.dont suppose you slackened the dizzy bolts at any point and dizzy timing has changed? definatly sounds like fuel is making it into the cylinder so I'd be checking timing :)

You say it started once but you stopped it. How long did it run for

Double check ht leads while your checking dizzy, only takes a bit of an awkward pull on one when changing sparks to damage one.

If its a big earth strap with an eye let on the end it's the main earth. Should go onto the engine mount

If it's got a plastic spade type connector it could be water temp - there are two sensors on the elbow or it might be oil pressure

Does it sound like its cranking faster than usual?

It might be really flooded. If so sometimes you can clear it by pressing the accelerator right to the floor while cranking - this usually turns off the injectors and allows fuel to disperse with enough cranking

Take a spark plug out to look inside the bores to see if its flooded?

Possibly but it sounds like something a bit more fundamental to me. Try to fix that and see what happens.
