to be fair many people get extremely good power from the stock manifold, yes you would get more out of aftermarket but why bother when you can get 500bhp out of the stock and you know it wont crack. makes sense to me to keep it in one peice

Mostly I'd bother because you can get free power while making a safer engine!

The stock manifold is OK but the standard line that it's fine up to 6,000,000HP is just bunkum

It works certainly but the unequal runners and generally restricted flow are not doing the engine any favours!

too true but when does it become a necessary item on a road car that sees the track?

what im saying is if you can get power out of the stock unit and staying the safe side of reliable rather than going for a flashy looking manifold that will crack all the time just for the sake of a few ponies and less reliable part surely doesnt make too much sense on a road car?

no questions that a tubular is better, hell we all know that but at what point does the stock unit deemed obsolete?

Not all aftermarket manifolds will crack
However, cheap rubbish off ebay is guaranteed to have more crack problems than a LA drug den

When to fit one is more difficult. If all you can afford is ebay then never. If you can afford a decent/bespoke item then pretty early in the mods process in my book

hmmm, interesting... you may have changed my mind with regards to them then..

however your line with regarding the problems, that certainly made me laugh!! hah :D

money is not particularly a problem, and i like one off items hence the one off mid sections from Tim, but what knind of size etc is good? i have never looked into manifolds really

List of suppliers please Steve...... :D

I acknowledge there are a few cast aftermarket manifolds available so I'm sure they would probably be unlikely to crack. Fabricated tubular manifolds won't be as strong so they are more likely to crack. One of the things which have been tried recently on Formula Ford 'Kent' engines to reduce the chance of cracking is to fit an exhaust manifold facing plate which joins all four of the exhaust runners. Any support you can give the runners and/or manifold would be a benefit. Witness the OEM support struts between the block and turbo/manifold. Most people leave the support struts off if they decat and fit a hybrid turbo. Probably not a wise move although I've been guilty of this myself in the past

stock manifold isnt all that . ive seem them cracked and the gasses from cylinder 2 flow right over the port of cylinder 3 on the way to the collector , not seperate at all . ( st205 wrc manifold )

I’ve had 2 185 manifolds crack across the top of 3 and like Don said all the support brackets are important, the key is to assemble the manifold and down pipe in a neutral stress position, although not a guarantee to stop cracking it certainly helps to reduce it. Dorris
