Had to take the air filter out tonight for it's regular clean - since ditching the resonator box it get's a little leafy in the airbox - I really should mesh the cold air feed

Anyhoo, as I have piston problems I was expecting it to be a little oily in there.

A little.

Top half of the box had a decent film over it, as did the air filter. Lifted the filter out to find the bottom half of the airbox contained a pool of oil. Loads of the stuff. Bottom half of the air filter is oil-free, so this must have been blown back up the intake pipe - I'm getting lots of compressor surge at the moment - probably due to the fact the dump valve is so gummed up with oil that it won't work until the engine bay has warmed up a lot

Since the way I see it the only real way for oil to enter the intake is via the PCV system or through extremely knackered turbo seals, I shall have to see what my aftermarket catch can is doing. I suspect it's devoid of any material inside - what could I put in here? People always recommend those steel pan cleaners, but the though of one of those disintegrating scares me

Anyway, I wanted to stop this "pool of oil" so I fitted a SARD induction kit I was saving till after the rebuild. Car is running and idling better already, although the compressor surge is even more noticeable - the DV is still very slow to react. If it wasn't for the smoke from the filler cap I doubt that I would even notice the piston trouble much at the moment - even the oil consumption has slowed...

What DV have you got on there?

That amount of oil is a little worrying :(

Have you done a compression test? If you have what were the psi's? Is that what you mean by piston problem? Lots of questions huh :)

Hi Tone,

Don't think I need a compression test tbh - the symptoms are fairly conclusive. My piston problem is most likely knackered ringlands.

Smoke from dipstick tube and oil filler cap (tip, don't look into yours if it's smoking like mine, my eye stung for ages after ). Not idling too well, although that has actually improved a lot with the induction kit. Huge oil consumption.

I've discussed it in a couple of other threads OC/DC  and the rebuild is actually starting at last, hopefully getting the block out of my kitchen and of to an engineer to check out in the next week or so. If it needs to much of a bore, I'll probably have to stump up for a new block. Not ideal, but needs must since I'd rather not have one crack. Then it's forgies, crower rods and a full ancillary refresh :) Most likely a new turbo too.

Oh, and the induction kit...

I've never heard anything like it, it's hugely loud - so much so I had to make sure everything was connected (and will be again tomorrow). It's far louder than anyone elses I ever remember hearing

Scot,

I'd stick one of those plastic teflon pot scrubbers in there. Less likely to break up and less destructive if it does!

I was going to say I reckon your rings are gone. If they are real bad which from the stinging eyeball symptoms sounds like they are, I'm sure thats why your airbox is saturated in oil. Its amazing how far back it'll get. When Pinto lumps suffer from rings they can fill the airbox to the brim :?

Thankfully it wasn't that full... :)

I was just suprised at how much was in there, given like you say how far back the airbox is...

Scot,
From reading this thread is it a bad idea to fit an induction kit?

I am looking to get one in the next few months. My car is not suffering from any ill effects at this moment in time. I know people advise to make sure a GT4 is of good stock before modifying it commences.

Can anyone advise what will be the best induction kit for my st185 CS?

I am gathering modification ideas that can be created on a budget.
My Apexi backbox is soon to be fitted. Then a de-cat pipe will be fitted, the rest of the exhaust is stock. Heatsheild wrap on the IC and an induction kit would be next.

Whilst on the subject....would making a more direct CAI for the induction kit be beneficial or potentially damaging? Is it better to keep the resonator box fitted if making a more direct CAI.
On past cars I have removed the resonator with no ill effects.

Any advise appreciated.

Cheers

Steve

most if not all cs & rc's have blitz,as the airflow meter on them is bigger then the a2a's.when you get the blitz it is a simple bodge of drilling holes in the backing plate.easy peasy :D

I have seen the Blitz advertised on Fensports site.

They quote 'Blitz/Fensport SUS Stainless mesh Induction filter Kit

Note: CS & RC models need simple modification to adapter'.

£125 +VAT is a bit steep or is that about right for a GT4?
I only know of the Apexi, HKS and Blitz cones for our cars.

If there is a K&N one, would anyone know if these are any good for the CS model.

Steve
