A bit more regarding 2JZGTE pistons. According to last photo (2JZGTE vs ST205) we can see that installed 2jz pistons in 3s bottom end gives 1mm “understroke”. Also, if oil nozzles in cylinder block will be well adjusted to hit oil port of 2jz piston – you will get cooling benefit!
Disadvantage – 2jz pistons have no oversize, only 86mm.

Also i'm using ebay's 320 bucks eagle conrods, it holds 500+hp and 8000+ rpm. (photo with st215 pistons, before installing to engine block)

How much extra clearance are you running ?
How does this compare with the wear on a typical 100K mile engine ?
As said above, the cost difference for standard vs. forged pistons is probably not great and the forged pistons will take more abuse so for an engine being rebored I would still be inclined to go the forged route.
I'm just pondering the possibility of a bit of heavy duty honing on a worn block and sticking with standard bore to maximise wall thickness.

.08mm. IMO 100KM just can be rehoned if it wasn’t overheated before :-)
As I know, JE recommends minimum .010 piston-cylinder clearance, it is other one hit to life of hone (cold start, TDC relaying)

Is this an ST185 fitted with a Gen 3 or Gen4 3S-GTE? ….Looks like coil on plug ignition. It would be good to hear the details on the electrical system mods too

It is mix of gen2 block-stock conrods-crank, gen3 (st205) pistons, gen4 (st215) head +1mm intake valves, Brian Crower stage3 cams, Haltech ECU unit and MSD coils.

dale
certainly some very very nice motors there, and the attention to detail is fantastic.

i just cant help but kind of feel what chris says in that the forged items will be less prone to the adverse affects that could happen from slightly poor conditions

fantastic to see stock pistons though, well done indeed!!!!

i don’t try to convince anybody that forged pistons doesn’t stronger than stock toyota items, maybe it is. I spent 100 euro for stock st215 pistons and other 100 euro for milling works - 200 euro, 4 times cheaper than JE.

Almost sure that 2 of 3 problems with stock toyota pistons (reliability) are covered in thoughts of car owner and it sounds like this – “mmm… my engine already run for 10-15 years and have 60.000-100.000 miles behind and it’s seems to me that i need more power, but friend of mine told that stock pistons wouldn’t carry out more than 350hp, and i have to buy forged pistons. So there are no other possibilities except an engine rebuild. Ok, lets have fun with overboost and full throttle before rebuilding...."
And of course previous owner of the car was old lady and was driving exceptionally to nearest bakery, that’s why engine is in very good condition and should sustain.
I saw EGT gauge in stock st205 car with 1.2bar boost, temp was around 1050-1100C....When my engine runs ~2 bar of boost temp around 860-880C.

Hi Gary,
thanks for hooking me up with that infos on mr2oc.com.
i follow your thread.quit informative stuff here.
i would had better details for my posting if i had a unmodified gen3 3sgte piston to compare back in the days with my caldina pistons.but the dish was flattened so i only was able to tell the hight info is the same (talking about fitting aftermarket gen3 3sgte pistons in a gen4 engine) nevertheless back to your topic!

i have one question in fact : would you say that St205 pistons are stronger than St215 pistons due to the thickness of the dish?

demonslayer,

I am not in a position to comment re comparative strength.
Only one thing is for sure, detonation will destroy all pistons!

Just pointed someone to this thread and dissaapointed to find many pictures gone. There was some very useful research & info here and it would be nice if the pictures could be re-instated if possible. Or is it just my PC having an off day ?

The ST215 rods appear to be drilled looking at the drilling in the big end bearings
Image

Must admit I didn't check whether it was a blind hole or exited the rod

Does anyone know if the ST215 head gasket will fit an ST185 (rev 2) engine?
