just a quick question for those in the know, for smoother gear changes if there a bit grindy (after garage changed gear oil) should you replace it with a thicker or thinner oil to calm it down?

Many people seem to think that mtf oil is rather good but from my own experience its a but thin, maybe someone disagrees but your best off with a standard fully synthetic. The gearbox is machined to high tolerances to your best off using the correct viscosity

Fit the recommended GL5 gearbox oil...

If it's notchy is commonly either gear change linkage bushes, clutch pedal adjustment or a worn gearbox.

Filling with a different oil won't cure a worn gearbox...
