I think we are planning on same sort of trip ( minus the car problems mind) to Lake district or Scotland for the last week or two in June.

Reason for failure of 2nd car out of the 3 that went to the lake district. (First was clutch on my clio)

This is now the second ECU I know about to have this capacitor spill it's guts over the surrounding components. The last one was repaired successfully by cleaning / repairing corroded track & fitting new capacitor.

Electrolytics tend to dry up with age.
They normally give a problem when they haven't been powered for a while (months/years) for example when you get an old telly out of the attic and plug it in - often a bang & puff of smoke within a few hours.
Not sure why these failed as both cars had been in constant use for years.
