They used the 165 until they released the Carlos Sainz. The A2A version was unworkable in rallying conditions.

As far as I know TTE did test the regular ST185 but as emicen said it was found to perform worse than the ST165. Which was kept until the CS was used.

Yes sir :) The 165 was used right up till the end of the 1991 season, the 185 CS rolled out for 1992-1994 with the 205 making an appearance along side the 205 for the first few rallies of the 1995 season before taking over.

Might have the dates slightly out since I dont have my trusty 90's WRC DVD infront of me

That corresponds with what I know of Malcolm. I am pretty sure they never rallied the air to air intercooler version of the ST185. Brian Long's book on the Celica doesn't mention Toyota ever using this model of GT-Four in competition. Toyota could have tested it privately I suppose before they developed the water to air intercooler ST185RC/CS but I've never seen this mentioned anywhere.

I would imagine the pre-release testing of the car would have identified the A2A set ups problems and set the wheels in motion for the development of the different specification homologation model. The emphasis was huge on rally success for Toyota back then, I wouldnt be surprised if the 185 was developed with input from TTE from the outset.

In this context, homologation means the same base model of car had to be produced in a road-going version in order to be used in WRC. AFAIK homologation rules no longer apply to WRC.

To my reasoning, the CS is the WRC homologation model =)
