It's still dirt cheap to call mobiles or landlines worldwide.

Much cheaper than BT

I used it for 3 months in Japan. Varying sucess levels to be fair.

I was on the system before it was upgraded though, hence over 1,000,000 users online made it impossible for the people at the other end to hear me.

You can get it free anyway & your not limited to just users using Skype.
The only problem with this type of technology is that you need an end to end solution running QOS, although 70% of the internet support QOS in reality only 40% use QOS & without QOS the service is adhoc & rather pants to be frank.
