Booked on these two airfield days with Motorsports Events, to (hopefully) blow out the winter cobwebs. Because Motorsports events are nice people they will let me bring both cars so that I'm not stuck without a drive if the GT4X fails the noise test (which it probably will :( ).

Be nice to see how the ST205 goes with it's upgraded suspension and brakes anyway.

Edit - Title updated to reflect next TD

I have always found Motorsport Events to be really well run days.

When are you going Dave?

Might nip down as they are both close to me :-)

Dates as thread title Phil, be good to see you if you can get over - especially if you come in the ST205 as I'd love to see Duncan's handywork close up. Planning on going to Combe later in the year too but I need to find out exactly where I am with the sound test first.

Missed the dates in the title, using TapaTalk at the time, and as Don posted, what is the GT4X.

Also, if you download a dB meter to your phone, it is normally within 3dB ish at 1/2 meter from the exhaust as it is normally checked.

May give you a clue as to how loud it is?

I also have a couple of 3" bungs if it fits that you could use?

It will restrict power but get you on the track:)

Sorry - GT4X is Ex Fensport/Adrian Smith car (Blue, Gen7/4WD/3SGTE by JEMS)

Adrian suggested it was producing about 105dB. Bungs are not an option - too much risk of engine damage from increased back pressure. Initial idea was to run a 'Decibel Devil' (www.decibeldevil.co.uk) as the 5" model should fit into the (oversize) tailpipe and might give 2-3dB reduction without affecting back pressure (minimal effect anyway).

That might well not be enough with a lot of track days having a 100dB or less limit, so in the long term I expect to add an additional silencer across the back of the rear valance of the car this additional silencer and associated pipe will be made of the same diameter pipe as the existing system (90mm). I'm in contact with BTB regarding this work.

Because sorting out the new silencer is unlikely to be done in the next 3 weeks or so, in the meantime I'm going to get hold of a decent noise level meter from a friend who works in motorsport to get an idea of how big the problem is, and because Keevil and Hullavington are both pretty close I'll be taking both cars there so we can (a) find out what their meter says and (b) if we get lucky with the decibel devil, maybe even get to take the GT4X out on circuit.

Bit of a half-baked plan I know but hey...

I wondered if that was the ex-Adrian Gen7!

If it's around 105dB then you'd probably be OK for the Donington 'noisy' days but not much else. Joe Ellis at BTB was very helpful when they fabricated the 3" system for my ST205 track toy project. It wasn't exactly cheap but it wasn't as expensive as some places and the workmanship was faultless.

There is a lot of variability in the noise testing between different circuits/venues. At some of the Combe test days we even have to fit an auxiliary silencer 'cherry-bomb' type to the Formula Fords and they are already silenced....ridiculous

What are your plans for the car, are you going to sprint/hillclimb/race or just do the odd track day?

From speaking to Joe it looks like I'll probably get away with an addition to the current system so hopefully cost won't be too great. Might also look at getting the current silencer box repacked (if re-packable).

You're exactly right about the limitations of trying to run a 'noisy' (~105dB) car although there are a few circuits that (sometimes) have a 105dB limit (Silverstone, Llandow, Blyton Park, Oulton, Anglesey, Cadwell occasionally have them as well as Donington) there are as many or more where the doors would remain firmly closed for me with the car its current state. My goal is to sort something out so that the car will reliably test at under 100dB (if that proves possible).

Most of the days I'm interested in attending are run by MSE and so the idea is to get it tested with their equipment early on.

Probably just trackdays this year, with some sprinting and hill climbs in the longer term if things go well.

nice, is the car the same spec engine wise as when they had it?

at 105db you will fail most tests as stated, my car registered 104.7db last time round and that was them being generous and letting me off at just over half revs as opposed to 3/4 so a bung or silencer is a good idea. :)

Adrian remapped it on V-Power also with a nod to making it more tractable to drive on the road, boost has also been dropped - probably running somewhere between 500/550hp at the crank. No longer has the PPG gearset or Ikyea shifter, so running a helical cut box. Some of the interior (centre console etc.) has been refitted along with the passenger seat but otherwise unchanged. It's a remarkably civilised drive provided you have earplugs!

The objective with silencing is to get a system together to try to take the worry out of attending days with 100dB limits (with sufficient margin to take into account the fact that not everyone's dB meter will read the same).

It is good to hear that Adrian is comfortable running 500-550bhp through the standard drivetrain and plat diffs front and rear. That's the same spec as my build although I have retained the OEM open front diff. Getting hold of a TRD front diff is virtually impossible. I think Adrian picked his up from the GT4OC.
The advice I have is to run on race fuel. V-power is good but doesn't quite have the same consistency and antiknock margin as race fuel. Yes it's expensive but the view is its more reliable than trying to control knock with sensor gate outputs to the ECU.
I'll be very interested to hear how you get on at the MSE venues so do keep us posted :)

It's only going to be the ST205 there I'm afraid squarepants - been trying to get hold of an additional silencer thing for the GT4X for weeks but the suppliers haven't sent it out yet and the car isn't going to get anywhere near 100dB without it.

Looks like it's going to be a nice day though - will swap to my FZ201s tonight.
