Hi Folks,

Shortly I will be assembling my engine back together. Having fully stripped one down I am reasonably comfortable putting it back together but wondered if anyone had a guide, list any tips?

At the moment I have the assembled bottom end with crank, rods and pistons in.

I'd like to fit the head first if possible to try to clear the decks in my garage, can the head be fitted before the water and oil pumps etc?

Cheers :)

Hi Mike,

sure no problem if you do this

first i though the same that it could be a pain of work to re-assamble everything, but then i noticed that it is pretty easy if you sorted all the bolts correctly :)

I put the sump on first as the engine is much easier to spin without the head on

So that means scraper plate, oil pump, oil pickup, ally sump and tin sump
I don't think there was any impact on water pump fitment but I can't remember about the plastics

I also fitted the oil heat exchanger early in the process - this just closes holes that might otherwise ingest dirt or tools

Another tip, once the head is on with oil pressure switch in place the engine is oil tight. Fit the new oil filter, fill with oil (remember the sump plug!) and use an electric drill on the oil pump nut to prime the oil system. It you have a multi meter you can check continuity across the OEM pressure switch to see when it gets pressure. Mine took a good 30 seconds to prime but then kept pressure for nearly a minute

Another tip - when you have the engine together i.e. water and oil tight, before fitting the cambelt, spin the oil pump with an old cambelt - this will prime the oil pump and push oil around the engine - you might be surprised at how difficult it is to prime the oil pump.... I was!

Should be pretty easy using a cambelt if you did it with a drill like what I said up there
