hey guys, came across my 1st 205 related problem already and its a biggy! took the car out for a drive yesterday and after driving it for approx 10-15 minutes it felt as though the brakes were starting to bite without touching the brake pedal as another few miles went on the brakes continued to bite harder and harder before i had to stop as the car was not drivable. It seems as though the brakes are applying ever so slight, increasing pressure to the discs and as I drive the discs slowly heat up until they start to bind. I eventually managed to in effect depressurise the brakes before coasting back to base on the hardbrake. ![]() once back I bled the brakes and to be honest it didnt help. heres my thinking, when I press the brake pedal, pressure is applied to the calipers. On release of the pedal how does the pressure become bleed? The reason I ask is because it seems as though whilst driving the car the problem seems to get worse, pedal gets stiffer and more brake pressure is applied. Because all four calipers are playing up it certainly suggests the master cylinder assembly but not sure where to go to fix. Should I just replace the whole lot or try and find individual components to fix will the master cylinder from my ABS 185 fit my import non ABS 205?? cheers guys ![]() |

I don't think the master cylinders will fit. I have had the same thing on an Astra. The breaks started binding a little, started to heat which caused the brake fluid to warm up and expand. The more the fluid expanded the more the breaks got warm and on it went until they were locked solid. I released the pressure at a bleed nipple and drove it with no breaks. Apparently there was a valve in the master cylinder that causes the problem on them. I changed the cylinder and all was good. Well, except it was still an Arstra. |

The pressure equalises when the pedal is right off. The first NM ofpiston travel covers the port to the reservoir and then starts pushing fluid towards the brakes. If you're sure it's not just 1 brake binding (check for 1 wheel hot when it happens) then you need to adjust the pedal so the pushrod comes further out. I did post a detailed description and diagram of how it works on a clutch thread a while back if you have a hunt. |

im going to have a good look at the 185 master cylinder and see if it will fit and have a look at pedal travel. I havent touched the pedal however so im inclined to have a look at the cylinder 1st. will keep you posted |

This sounds identical to a problem I experienced a few years ago in my ST205. The brakes only had to be gently caressed and I eas head butting the windscreen. It turned out that it was the brake master cylinder. When we took it apart it was a horrible sight with lots of rusty orange water, knackered seals etc. |

i thought as much, got the 185 cylinder in the house now to try a fit, if it doesnt then i'll have to strip/buy another. dont really think that there will be a decrease in performance between the 185 and 205 if indeed it does fit (next to no diff in piston size) will keep you updated |

Worth a quick check that the pedal return spring is ok and pulling the pedal back up. As above, quite likely the dreaded brown sludge causing the piston to stick and not return fully. managed to get this sorted today, turns our the master cylinder was minging and so needed a damn good clean. 1. Remove the 2 brake lines attached to the master cylinder (10mm) 2. Undo the 2 12mm bolts holding the master cylinder to the servo and remove from car (there is a bracket holding other brake hoses behind the 12mm bolts, be careful) 3. Undo phillips screw and remove reservoir from cylinder 4. Using circlip pliers, remove clip from the back of the master cylinder and remove internals (stand by - brake fliud!) 5. Clean and replace as above 6. Bleed brakes and bask in your awesomeness!!! |
