Post subject: | timing question |
im sure its me being thick but i cant find the timing mark on an ST205 WRC i was trying to check the timing this morning using a borrowed timing light which probably was used to set the timing on the arc. I assume base timing is set the same on all cars with number 1 cylinder? the light borrowed clips directly onto the spark plug and ht lead and just becomes part of the lead, so rather than take the charge cooler out the way i just did this at the distributor. so possibly a stupid question is the HT lead marked no1 (original toyota leads) the lead that goes to no1 cylinder? because i cannot see a timing mark when doing this. ive never done timing on this car so does anybody have a description or picture of where abouts on the pulley the mark is and what it is i.e notch bump etc because for the life of me i cant see it. and is it possible for a car to run if the timing has been set using the wrong cylinder? thanks in advance |

No.1 or No.4 should give the same result. No. 2 or 3, the mark will be at the far end of the pulley and not visible. It's normal to use a bit of tip-ex on the timing mark otherwise it's hard to see. (apply to notch, then scrape off excess from round the notch to leave a thin line. Make sure you link E1 & TE1 in the diagnostic connector and verify engine light is flashing, then check timing is set to 10 degrees before TDC. |
