Hey guys, booked an MOT for the car on monday and was doing some final checks to the car just now when sods law, the car broke! Took the car for a spin along the road, covered in total around 2 miles and all was fine, no problems at all. Got back to the garage, selected reverse and there was a clunk when I started to move. Felt almost as if the handbrake was semi on but got the car parked. Once in the garage, selected neutral and when I started to raise the clutch, the car moved forward :shock: !!!!!

Pushing the clutch pedal stops the car moving (like in neutral)

Real struggle selecting any gears when stationary but can get reverse (same handbrake semi on as before)

Trying to restart the car without the clutch in causes it to move forward.

basically from what I can see, the car is staying in gear when neutral is selected. Because I have some element of control with the clutch (as described above), can I assume the clutch is ok and it is a gear selector issue?? If so, I would really appreciate some advice as my MOT is on monday and I get the funny feeling I may not get a pass as the car is!!lol

had this a few years ago the clutch had started to go however the selector was going too changed the clutch and solved the problem till my selector went

obviously Im not going to be able to change the clutch between now and monday however. Im kind of hoping that a little bit of clutch pedal adjustment may help. The only wonder I have is that if the clutch was trout, I would expected to have trouble getting in gear, rather than getting out. Also combined with the fact that I still have a normal clutch biting point, it all confuses me!! :?

Sounds like gearbox / gear selector problem.

Clunk while moving sounds like bad news as it suggests it's internal to the gearbox.

Only selector problem I've has was cable failure where I could select neutral and 1/3/5 but not any of the gears which involved pushing the selector arm. If you have a c clip drop off can cause the same symptom.

All I can suggest is get someone to move the gearstick while you check the levers are doing what they should. If so, then I suspect it's internal.

Having removed the airbox and other stuff in the way of the gear selector, it seems that both gearbox selector cables are attached properly, there are only 2 arnt there?lol. Im really gutted to be honest that this has happened but maybe this can be seen as an opportunity rather than anything else. Any other suggestions? Cheers for the quick reply nibbles

Right, had a little investigation today and it seems that some of the gear selector gubbins within the box are knackered. An st205 box will bolt straight on right, however I'm lead to believe that there is an issue with the speed sensor.also, the clutches between the 2 boxes are completely interchangeable?
