I have a problem with my HTR fuse (10A) blowing when I switch on the aircon. Measurig the current running through the fuse it goes up to about 22A with aircon running. Unplugging the aircon pump and plugging into a spare pump lying on the engine as an earth, I get a reading of about 4.5A for a few seconds before the AC light starts flashing and it cuts back off.

Looking at the circuit, there appear to be 2 coils in the pump. I'm wondering if it's a 2 stage thing like starter solenoids where a high power coil actuates until it's pulled in then switches to a lower power.

I could just swap pumps, but don't really want to lose £50 worth of gas if I can get round it with an external timer relay. (The aircon works fine apart from drawing high current).

If you've got a spare on the bench check to see if the clutch/oulley can be removed. That way you might be able to swap the electrickery over and leave the fluid intact

I seem to remember Don having some issues in the past with his AC compressor on the blue car.

That was related to overtensioning the drive belt and knackering the bearing as a result.
