Post subject:  Crazy car

Hi all. My names jon and two weeks ago picked up my first turbo car, a 1992 celica st185 gt4. Wow, what a car. Has been running fine up until last week when it started jolting under acceleration. Basicly, car has gone through a few different phases with this jolting.

1st: under hard acceleration turbo spooled and about 4k- jolt, a split second loss of power, transmission light flicked on then off, backfire.......!

2nd: driving under normal conditions, stopped for a bus, had to do hill start, so in 1st about 2k revs, jolt, loss in power transmission light flicked on and off, backfire......!

3rd: driving along 50mph, not on boost, throttle lightly pressed to maintain speed, sudden loss in power, transmission light flickered on and off, rev counter dropped to 0, backfires, rev counter started dancing up and down, every few meters, power loss, on off, on off.......?!?

4th: normal drive to shops, when stopped in car park, revs dropped just under 1k at idle, transmission light flicked, car stutteted then revs rose back up to 1.5k then again started to drop below 1k almost to 0, again transmission light flicked car stuttered, then rose back to 1.5k. Did this about 6 times then cut out completely.

I really dont know much about turbo cars so this is all new. I have basic mecjanical knowledge but I have no idea what is going on with this!

Any advice would be greatfull.

Following modifications have been done to car and also what I have done since having car for 2 weeks.

St185 model, with st205 turbo, ecu, and injectors. Running 0.9 bar with mbc and boost gauge.
Front mount intercooler and large alloy radiator. Battery relocated to boot. Metal head gasket.
Oil change 1 week ago, and new filter. New sparks as thought it was misfiring due to problem above ^^
Coolant flush and change.
Oil catch tank installed.
All vacuum pipes, hoses etc that I can see are all fine.

What is wrong with my car?? Please help!

Jon

Hi Jon & welcome to the club.

When you say transmission light, I would assume you mean engine light. If so, hopefully the ecu will have seen a fault and stored it. Check your stored error codes using the following guide and post the results to aid diagnosis:

Re. crunchy gears, is the clutch bite point very low ? Does it tend to grind going into reverse when stopped ?

Sounds to me like an electrical issue. Power being lost to the ECU or a bad earth.

Hold on... just noticed... ST185 engine and ST205 ECU? You cant just stil an ST205 ECU on an ST185 engine and expect it to run... can you?

Spot on response as usual from Nibbles.
1) Check error codes.
2) report back on error codes

Hi guys and thankyou for replies. I have now this morning installed a bov, and also found out that previous owner has cut and taped up various wires from maf so that a air temp gauge could be installed. With the engine running, wriggling this taped up bodge resulted in idle fluxuations and onto a stall! I think this is my problem and would explain the randomness of cutting out. I've made it more secure and been for a drive. All seems fine. I will be wanting a new maf now so anyone know best place to buy one?
I will also check error codes later and report back.

If it's a rev3 ECU you don't need a MAF (or AFM as they're normally known on gt4's). The rev 3 works purely from a MAP sensor (manifold absolute pressure, same thing as 'turbo pressure' sensor on REV 2.

I suspect the wiring has been a bit bodged, especially in the light of the response above. It would be good to have a closer inspection to see how it's been done and make sure there aren't any nasties lurking. I notice you're not far away in Weymouth & I'm happy to have a look. (I'm an electronic engineer). I'm about 20 miles away in Sturminster Marshall.

Wicked, that sounds great, we could make it a mini gtg round mine as just had pm off si saying he's in weymouth quite often and fancies meeting up. When are you free? As I've said I'm very new to turbos so all a bit of a head mash for me as not learnt about them yet.

Oh yeah, duh!!! Such a dufus!!!

St24 2.5 v6 dohc

-St200 uim and lim
-st200 throttle body.
- fully plumbed in induction with silicon and stainless pipes, with twin cold air feeds from front bumper.
- 3" twin stainless exhaust

I'm unaware if it has been mapped but I have dyno graphs to back power figures, I guess these mods would increase the bhp by at least 15. Up for sale at the moment, as dont have room for two cars anymore due to moving house recently.
