Had this noise for a few weeks now and is only noticeable with the passenger window down and driving past walls or other reflective surfaces. It sounds like a lightweight metallic rotational clinking and is most noticeable from 25mph+

Any clues welcome guys, I've got an idea but probably completely wrong

PS. Things i've checked; the cotter pin on the end of the driveshaft and retaining crown washer. Stripped the brake - pins out, the lot. Braking doesn't affect the sound anyway, nor does being in or out of gear and is proportional to speed as the video shows somewhat.

Sounds to me like the split pin "clinking" in the end of the wheel bearing nut.

I had a very similar sound on mine when i removed a driveshaft and when putting it all back together i used a split pin that was 'just' ever so too thin so it rattled.

Yeah, sounds like a likely candidate, however I took it off completely yesterday and drove up the road... and the sound's still there!

Any work done on tyres or wheels recently? I had a weight touching the caliper which gave a wierd noise.

Only to the rears, Sirius. I've done a crude hand test of the wheel bearing too and there doesn't appear to be any play, nor does there appear to be any debris stuck between the dust guard and disc.

I always thought that when a wheel bearing was shot there would be play in the bearing, but this isn't so!

I have seen an indentation in the mating surface within the bearing onto which the ball bearing race sits/runs - this gave weird noises at approx 20-30mph... took a while and a few ££ to find!

I have been wondering if the bearing could be the culprit but was hoping not as like you say, it wouldn't be easy to trace

I've gone and booked it onto the ramp for Tuesday as I've had the assembly apart 3 times now and it's driving me nuts. Any excuse to have a look under the car

Does it still make the sound with the wheel off? I'd check to make sure the brake disc is turning dead straight. It could be ever so slightly moving in and out knocking the pads in the caliper.

You make a good point there, I'd not thought of that. Though surely there'd be significant steering wheel wobble in the cabin if this was the case? I certainly have to consider this despite the OEM discs and pads not being that old. Thanks Leeky.

The garage have been out in the car with me and reckon it's the bearing. They're only suggesting replacing the knackered item but honestly I was thinking it would be worth having both done at the same time.

What are your thoughts, guys?

When you say both what do you mean? Both the front wheel bearings?

It doesn't immediately sound like a wheelbearing but it does sound bearingy

You could do with narrowing it down unless you do take a punt on wheelbearings ( I'd do both sides but there's no real need to!)

If you can get if off the ground again try a stethoscope on the hub, tube next to cv etc to narrow it down

Described well as a broken marble sound Will be getting a bearing kit from Redline Car Parts. Part No. FBK678 ringing in at £47.01 inc VAT. Blueprint over here in NI seem to be double that price, weirdly.

EDIT - Scrub that, that wheel bearing was TOO SMALL!
