upon looking at oil mans gear oil recommendations i am stuck as to my choice for gearbox oil... now we have the

http://www.opieoils.co.uk/p-973-fuchs-t ... uctDetails

the Fuchs titan gear 75w-90 semi and that is at £29

now then there is the millers oil at like £69

is there really that much difference to warrent the price difference or is the Fuchs oil more than upto the job??

cheers

dale

I'd advocate a 75W90 - fully synthetic.

I suspect the price difference is semi vs fully synthetic oil?

Hello,
when you have crunching in a gear, or a hard shifting, than i would recommend to use 75w140 diff oil for the transmission and the rear diff to.

i will have a look in a moment kris, after being down to muddywaters house today i have had a word and will be going for the fuchs i think. :)

there are no crunching in gear roadboy, gearbox is perfect, its just that the milage is up for the gear oil change, circa 30k miles so time for a fresh diff and gear oil.

Dale nice to meet you today - hope you had a safe journey back.

I run the fully synthetic Silkolene Syn 5:

This has, as indicated, been rebranded as the Fuchs Titan Syn 5: http://www.opieoils.co.uk/p-68901-fuchs-titan-race-syn-5-75w-90-fully-synthetic-gear-oil-was-silkolene-syn-5-75w-90.aspx

My old S15 had clunky gears, had some left over gear oil from the previous owner, was 75w140. Was aweful when cold and only got bearable when warm.

Replaced it with some Motul Gear300 75w90 and the difference was unreal, like a new gearbox. So much better!

Just changed the gear oil in Rufus with the same stuff and once again, noticably smoother and spot on from cold. I'd certainly recommend it :)

yes indeed nige i got home pretty safe and sound, only one incident where the box slid!! haha, but it was a slightly too tight left hander but nothing major, the cam just fell out.

i was amazed the fiesta pulled it along so easily, i retract my statement i made about fords whist i was at your house!

i think it got heavier when i got it home though! :(

had to carry the bugger about 100m around the back of my house!!! But we did it!! :D

so now i just need to start taking her apart, what would you recommend to clean it down, brake cleaner or what??

cheers again Nige, good chatting too :)

I've tried most of the different gear oils and I can tell you that Castrol Driveline 75w90 is the best I have tried so far and it is quite cheap. The last lot I got was around £8 a litre on Ebay.
If your gearbox is getting on a bit The Fuchs syn5 will be too slippy causing the syncro rings not to operate correctly so downshifts will be crunchy. Do a Google search and you will find the Subaru guys dont like the stuff. It showed up a worn 4th gear syncro on my car.
I cant fault Castrol Driveline gearchanges are always smooth even when cold.
6 litres is always enough for my car. With the car sat level I can get just under a litre in the rear diff and just over 5 litres in the gearbox/transfer box. I'm sure the official figures are higher though so you may want to get 7 litres. See what others say.
Dont forget there are 2 drain plugs on the gearbox you need to remove to full drain it and one fill point on the front.

syntran5 as it was produced marked improvement in my car. I'd recommend it and in fact I have recommended it many times. Yet to hear of a GT4 owner wit a problem and I don't really care if Subaru owners don't like it. They drive a totally different car with a totally different drivetrain!

Expect it to take near on 5l of oil to replace the gb/transfer oil "d another litre for the rear diff

so the Fuchs gets another +1 then!!!

the fully synthetic over the semi syntectic then too?

what is the major difference with regards to the two in the gear oil?

like the pros of the fully synthetic over the semi?

I'm in the same position looking for the right oil, right now Dale. Contacted Tim at Opie who suggested a couple of fully synth 75w 90's but also said that i should wait a couple of days as they're just about to initiate a sale - if that's of any use to you?

Last stuff i used was Valvoline which was so so but didn't make any difference to the stuff Toyota filled it with before i had it.

If you want to go for the best, the Millers CRX 75w-90 NT, Motul Gear 300, Redline GL5 and Millers TRX are ideal for the gearbox. The Castrol Syntrax, Motul Motylgear and Fuchs Gear Syn are all decent alternatives.

EDIT: Ordered 5l of Millers TRX 75w 90 for the box and 5l of Millers XFS 5w 40 for the block - came to £85 inc postage and vat from Opie.
