Post subject:  Gearbox Breather/Wiring Loom Damage

Just a heads up/query

When people have had engines out have they inspected the main wiring loom

There's a large plastic encapsulated section which sits over the 'box right next to the breather

I've noticed this is has always been a bit claggy on mine in this neck of the woods and I assume most are the same

However, this morning's joyous job was to clean it up ready for refit. I decided that since all the loom taping is failing and I had a couple of tweaks in mind I'd peel this section back to bare wires. Some/most of my wire tucking plans have bitten the dust as I ran into a serious lack of boverred when doing the loom after cleaning up this mess

However, rambling aside, I did I found some disturbing stuff. The wiring on mine shows heavy contamination with oil and grit. This seems to have led to stiffening/degredation of the wire casings themselves :(

I've had to replace a couple which had visibly cracked sheathing too and have cleaned everything up again

If you're in that neck of th woods PITA thiugh it may be I'd suggest a cursory inspection (It's not trivial however :( ).

Rather annoyingly I've just had one of those cut Vs delete senior moments with the camera memory card :( so there's no pictures. It wasn't that exciting anyway as I don't have a macro mode for close up stuff

Incidentally, can anyone think of a reason not to redirect the breather?

I'm thinking of a bit of hose down to the general vicinity of the steering rack where it can belch fumes to it's hearts content without causing further issues

With the looms I've worked on the combination of old age/heat/oil has resulted in hardening of the insulation and associated plastic connectors and sheaths. Particularly annoying when its the injector plugs that break :(
