Post subject:  A funny thing happened !!!

On the way to the Goodwood breakfast meet yesterday my old gear change problem re-inacted itself again.

Slightly different this time in that it did not drop out of gear more got stuck in gear.. namely in the end 3rd ?? Did get get the Batmobile safely back home but now seems completely stuck.. Any thoughts folks asume this will still be a linkage problem and not a broken gearbox :( as it was drivable.

Not the best of events just before LM but will swop to the Primera so at least I can take my cycle this time. Also I do have a new cable linkage set waiting to be fitted ( for the last 18 months). Opps! perhaps thereby hangs a tail.

But some reassurance on the first would be appreciated.

Cheers Nigel C. :)

Hi Nigel,
The only way to be certain is to to unclip the selector cables from teh GB end and see if you can then move the mechanism on top of the GB to engage gears as normal.

Having had a quick look at your box (chuckle chuckle - visions of Le Mans and you undressing in your tent and projecting it for all to see by candle light :-) ) I am afraid that my thoughts are that it is internal to the gearbox and possibly selector fork or clutch related.

I have had thsi happen to me before but my gear stick went really floppy as the clips on teh selector cables (GB end) had fallen off!)

Thank JP, "selector fork" IF.... that proves to be the fault is it accessable/replaceable without removing gearbox ? If not and removal only option may go down the re-built, re-con route unless we know someone with a known good one for sale.

Clutch seems still to be OK as is still dis-engaging when depressed and was allowing pull away in 3rd towards the end of return journey. Smoked a bit tho bit like 4.5K launch !!

Anyways will have to wait now... can chew over with the Boys when I get there..

Many Thanks Nigel C.

Nigel,

Sorry to hear the Batmobile won't be making it to La Sarthe. :(

I'm not heading down till Friday but hope to catchup over a beer sometime during the weekend. :)

Hi Nigel,
Fair call on the clutch. I assume that with the engine off you still can't get the bugger in / out of gear?

If a selector fork then is GB out IIRC. I am really not sure what teh problem is but from memory I had a wiggle of the selector cables GB end and all felt fine. I fear that a good known GB would be your best options if the new GB oil and clutch bleed has not solved it. Your gear stick felt as though there was little play in it so I really don't think that is the issue I am afraid.

IIRC steve & mike had a quick nose too and woudl be prudent to have a chat with teh other geeks over a "33" between Corvettes :-)

Enjoy Le Mans m8 - will catch up soon.

Nigel,

Given that it's been recalcitrant for a while I'd suggest a broken selector due to fatigue failure..

You're only simple fix is if 5th gear selector selector has failed as this is accessible from the end cover on the box. I know it sounds unlikely with it stuck in third but Adrian has suffered it a few times with similar symptoms

See you in a day or two to discuss :D
