Post subject:  ignition problems
Hi guys am a new member on the club i have a 96 st205 jdm.
At the minute having a problem with my ignition. The car was left idle for about two weeks and batt was dead when a went to start it. i charged up batt and putit back in a day later and had no reaction on turning the ignition (no ignition lights and car wouldnt start). I thought the problem was the ignition switch at back of the barrel so replaced this with a second hand one this started the car but stil no lights. can only get lights by making a loop between two wires. Any one ever herd a problem like this??its really annoying me. i miss driving her :cry:
ps got a new switch from toyota and stil have same prob

would really appreciate some help if anyone has any ideas. Thanks

The only time I've experienced somethin like this with my ST205 was when I left the one of the doors slightly ajar for a week and the interior lights drained the battery completely. Recharging the battery fixed the problem.

Do you have any idea what caused the battery to discharge completely and did it hold charge when you recharged it? If one of the cells is knackered then it may only have enough juice to light the panel but not turn the engine over. Have you tried another battery or jump leads from another vehicle with the engine running? This would eliminate the battery as the source of the problem before you go replacing parts on the car.

Apologies if you've done all of the above but I've found from experience that its often the simplest things that cause problems.

Once you've covered the above then its down to checking for bad earths, often the reason why the starter motor fails to spin, then if the engine spins but doesn't fire check you have a good spark at the plugs by removing one and earthing the plug against the cylinder head.

All basic stuff but a systematic approach to this will pay dividends.

Car is in with my mate whos an auto technician today fingers crossed he'l sort it. Tried a different battery with the new ignition switch i can start the car but have no lihts on the dash or break and indicator lights.

Disconnected the alarm imob and turbo timer at the start as we thought thixs could of been the problem..

Dont actually know what drained battery in first place it just hadnt been started for a while. think my altenator is acting up now aswel as batt isnt holding a charge. Wil let ya know how it goes wit techi he's working on it on monday thanks for the help guys

Which wires were you shorting to get signs of life on the dash?

From the description I'd guess it's blown a fuse but the old leccy spagetti is hard to troubleshoot until you're there with a meter

Given the other indicators, poor charging, mysterious battery flattening etc, I'd hazzard an initial guess of poor earting. Follow the min earth straps off the - battery terminal to the chassis and make sure all the connections are tight. It's also well worth removing the connections, cleaning the contact points and re-assembling with a smear of silicon grease to make sure everything is electrically sound.
The same goes for the heavy cable connected to the alternator.

Even if that doesn't help, which it may well not, you'll at least know that the basic electrics are sound

Is the check engine light coming on?

shorting out the feed wire to the ignition switch and the second stage feed gives me dash lights. would the fact that i have continuity as far as the switch mean that its not a fuse problem?
the dome fuse was blown but i changed it.

when i make the tempory loop and press the break pedal the lights go again and iv checked no wire s caught behind pedal. its really strange as all electrical connections seem to be sound. fingers crossed wil find the problem tomorro its hopefully something small
engine check light isnt coming on but all other lights are coming on

hi all
problem solved thankfully. one of the legs on a 100 amp fuse was broken. we ere getting continuity across the top of the fuse but discovered it wasnt sending the power back when we took apart the fuse board. thanks for all your help it sure feels good to be boosting again :D :D

sure was mate delighted its sorted especially without too much wire tracing i really didnt want to see her in bits on the floor ha

we also removed the turbo timercause itwas acting a bit strangely things were staying on that shouldnt have been.
