As some of you may have been aware, I have had a persistent woo woo woo noise coming from my car for some time :?

Originally we thought it might have been tyre noise as I had some really crappy Nangkangs on the car when I bought it.

However, a change of wheels/tyres disproved that theory. :(

We then thought it might be wheel bearings, supported by the fact the 2 rear wheel bearings had a degree of play on them when doing the wobbly wheel test . . . . but alas not.

As the noise had seemed to get worse over the course of time, and due to the fact that there was also a 'rumble' which could be felt through the passenger footwell, the spotlight move to the drive shafts and more specifically the outer CV joints.

After some fun and games getting the correct ends (see thread http://gt4dc.co.uk/forum/viewtopic.php?t=860) we spent a whole weekend fitting them to find that . . . . the noise was still there (Grrrrrrrrrrrrr).

So, a couple of weeks ago we started on the front wheel bearings, despite the fact there were no outward indications that they were worn.

We decided to attack the passenger side first as that was where the worst of the 'rumble' could be felt, but alas yet again we were foiled as there was no improvement.

By this point I was feeling very dispondant and had the suspicion that the route cause may be something more expensive and time consuming such as Gearbox or front diff.

HOWEVER . . . . . .

Lovely, super, smashing Hutch offered to change the 4th and final wheel bearing, on the driver’s side whilst we did the 'family thing' and went to Cornwall to visit my parents and what can I say?

The man is a STAR!

FINALLY I have a normal, quiet car (well, except for the exhaust he also fitted on for me   ) and driving is once more a pleasure. I can't begin to tell you all how happy I am :D

The moral of this story . . . . . it isn't always the most expensive part that is at fault!! Do the cheap and (relatively) easy stuff first, you might be pleasantly surprised

Great news Loosey! :D That noise must have been driving you up the wall for the last few months  Must be fantastic to drive a quiet car again.

Don, you wouldn't believe what a difference it has made  I will get some pictures of the old wheel bearing. To say it was a little worn is an understatement

But all through this, there was no movement when we did the wobbly wheel test, and the noise was consistent with a CV joint (even down to the ticking which developed over the last few weeks) which is why Kris was adamant it was the drive shafts.

Just goes to show, that you can't always rely upon the 'normal' way of diagnosing things

Only problem now is that i can now hear the normal squeaks and rattles from within the cockpit which I am going to have to sort :? still, that'll just be tightening up a few bolts, screws or whatever, so should be fairly simple.

Whooo Hooo - I have a quiet car! Image Image

Sounds like you guys are trying to put a band together!

The front bearings are easier to do on the 205 than the rears, since the darn arms etc have to be disconnected to extract the rear hubs. By comparison the fronts are straightforward :)

No i can't coz I don't have it any more!!! :?

If you had asked last week it would have been easy!

But the woo woo was in time with the wheels spinning and sounded exactly like someone murmuring woo woo woo to themself in a monotone voice. Try it!

I'll give you an demo if ever I see you Robby!

loosey darling,it might of been relatively easy for you as you was not there to see me struggle getting the hub nut off on my own.
But as i have said many times you are MORE than welcome to utilise my minimal talents. kris already replaced 3 bearings so i guess he has already done his fair share, it was good to be of assistance.

Love and hugs
Hitch
