i had similar rotational clinking noise to this, more noticeable on roundabouts as the passenger front became loaded.

as i recall i think dj diagnosed that the stub axel thread had stretched... resulting in the brake disc touching the front caliper

we replaced axle, bearing and cv joint with new parts :D

Having difficulty visualising that but it sounds like a ball ache! Speaking of which, the garage had the car all yesterday and finally called at 16:30 to say they'd had to give up on it for the day due to the driveshaft not coming out of the hub! Oh dear...

Update from the garage and it's definitely not good. They got the driveshaft out but the bearing shell has welded itself to the hub :( So the options are a new bare hub for £107+VAT or (as I've done) ring Colin and Martin for a replacement non-ABS item fired over as soon as poss. We'll see if they have one and how much that will be otherwise this will be £130 for the hub, £70 for the bearing kit and then labour on top... not cool!

They're also saying that this one seems to be an ABS hub with the sensor removed and as the outer part is stuck to the hub buying a new hub flange from TCB will not help either.

V1 - check my write up on how to change a wheel bearing... the inner part of the bearing is pressed onto the hub... are they getting confused?

Post pics for more help I say!

I'm not sure to be honest, Kris. I'll have to get a look at it when I go down tomorrow - hopefully get a picture too.

Been looking at your write up and took the exploded diagram off it too so I could get my head around it. It simply sounds to me like the outer surface of the bearing has gotten itself stuck in the axel carrier and it's non removable as a result. Does that make sense?

They said it was a mess inside, rusted and corroded.

These are the parts I think are stuck together... albeit front not rear axle

The message from the mechanic reads, "it's the outer shell which is stuck to the hub itself. This one seems to be an abs hub with the sensor removed."

I've got a feeling I'm completely wrong here...

The outer bearing housing needs to be pressed out of the hub...

This picture doesn't show how I did it but it does show the old knackered bearing still retained within the hub.

I think I just used a suitably sized socket to press the bearing out from the hub... It is pressed out from the inside of the hub to the outside as shown in the picture you just posted (if that makes sense!)

The worst part of the job is removing the inner race bearing surface from the stub axle... you need to grind away enough of the material to be able to remove this from the stub axle

By the fourth bearing change I got a lot better at it, lol!

I'd also recommend reading the how to remove 165 wheel bearing as this has additional pictures and probably shows this better than the 205 write up I did...

Thanks for taking the time to do this, Kris. By the sounds of it then, it is the outer bearing case that is stuck in the carrier (the part that you used 4 tons to push out in the 165?). That's all i can deduce from "it's the outer shell which is stuck to the hub itself." No surprising then he described it as having completely disintegrated inside.

Colin/Martin are overnighting me an ABS hub without a bearing so hopefully it'll be all sorted asap as I'm having to get a lift to work at 5am in the morning! :D

Does the replacement hub without bearing you are getting from Colin/Martin include the stub axle? If it doesn't I presume you are going to have to remove the bearing inner race from the stub axle as per Kris' pic?

Hi Don, I believe the garage have managed that part thankfully as I asked if they needed a new hub flange and they said no, its just the outer shell stuck to the hub. By that I assume they mean the outer shell is stuck to the axel carrier or I'm not sure what they mean.
