Night time shots - tripod required, try long exposure 15s?

Great macro shots by the way :)

well went out to whisby nature park with my new lens, the big gun 150-500mm sigma and my oh my, what a stunning lens it is.

all shot at 500mm and bearing in mind these are of dragonfly the first the detail is stunning the lens can get, i missed the head focus point but the bugger was quick!

Not bad for a 500 at the 500mm end and not a macro, hand held too

Nice moon :-)

Now these are not my pics but my cousin has started to transfer from regular photography to astro photography and is getting very geeky about it.

To give you an idea of the procedure you need a big telescope with SLR mounting, motorised base/tripod that is linked to a PC that keeps the moving planets/stars still in the view-finder (so must accurately track the movement). A series of long exposures are taken over a few hours. The results just look like a grey snow show. Each exposure is then layered in a computer programme to ascertain what is noise/fluff/crap in the atmosphere and disgarded the processed exposures then become one image of the star/random space stuff you were trying to picture but only just or maybe not visible. Spend quite a few hours playing around processing in photoshop or some uber geeky piece of software per picture and you end up with pictures like this.....

The kit used needs a transit van to transport to the middle of no where:-

He is an uber geek!

Very nice. I was and an tempted to get a 2x converter for this lens, would turn it in to an 1600mm lens, so basically double as close as the above image! :-D
Do love the night sky, even if i don't know what half it is. Haha

These are amazing images JP! I'd love to do this in Oz. The atmosphere is so clear you can see the satellites ISS and shuttle pass overhead. Shame the shuttle programme is finished.
