Hi everyone !
Im new here and I am Swedish .
I have som questions to ask.
My Mr2 2s-GTE is very noisy when engine is cold.
And after a bit of driving the engine is quiet.
Well it´s sounds a little..
The noise is somewere from the head around the cambelt area or cylinger nr1.
One of the sounds is like a bearing from the camshaft is broken or something and the other is like you have put sand in the enginehead and the camshaft cross the sand or something.
Don´t know how to say and my english "spelling" is not so good so i hope you understand it anyway.

I have checked :
Generator (toke of the belt)
Have check camshaft nocks, looks fine to me.
And I have done a engine flush two times.
And the gaskets from exhaust manifold is not leaking.

Don´t know what to check more!
Do any of you had the same problem as me ?

The car is a mr2 gen3 with turbo from 95.(same engine as GT-four 3S-GTE)
Japan import and has been in england from 97 to 08-just imported to Sweden.

have forgott to write that the sandcrossing noise comes somewere from the intake camshaft(around).

it sounds like an exhaust leak of some sort. Maybe the manifold is cracked rather than a leaking gasket

There's also the alternator around the inlet manifold if memory serves me correctly. I think it's in a different position on the MR2.

For a quick test you could try removing the auxilliary belt which drives the alternator and possibly the AC

The sound comes more from the intakeside of the engine .. We have check the exhaust also but nothing there..

If you mean T-VIS (?) I don´t have it .

I thought the alternator was located on that side of the engine in a MR2 setup. I know the GT4 has it engine side but had a feeling the MR2 was different

Also, do you have power steering?

You might have to try the old listening stick idea

Find a decent length of solid rod, metal is best. Put one end on various things until you track the noise down

Diceman has a noise similar to what you describe caused by a cracked exhaust manifold

No i have electric steering and it is in the front.
what is "alternator"? is it the same as t-vis ?

Alternator = dynamo = to charge the battery, does that help?

TVIS not fitted to your car. Fitted to the earlier MR2s, ST165 and ST185

Steve is right to point out that quite often a strange noise comes from either a blowing or cracked exhaust manifold - this can sound like a "tick tick" noise.

Another possibility is that the cambelt pulley bearings are worn?

What about the bearing in the alternator belt tensioner? These wear...

If the clearance between the valve and the camshaft is excessive this can tick - this is normally corrected by measuring the clearances and then fitting a correctly sized shim.

Always difficult to help diagnose these type of problems...when was the cambelt last changed? If it is nearly due then I would change this, the pulleys and the tensioner. As I took this apart I would carefully inspect the pulleys for wear...

Are you able to video this and e.g. place on youtube?

If its not exhaust blowing , then it be followers, re shimming as per kriss posted.

or cam bearings shot from lack of oil pressure

Anything making a noise in the cambelt cover tends to sound like it's coming from the head too though as the cover seems to amplify noise somehow

Here speaketh the voice of ticking 162 cambelt tensioner experience ;)

Listening stick (or umbrella at a push lol) is a vital tool in diagnosing noises and locating them
