Now to reveal the shining problem with this engine, bear in mind it didnt do many miles after rebuild before failing

No.4 big end bearing problem I reckon

Image

No.4 big end bearings have spun and welded themselves together

Pretty much all the bottom end is fubarred pics of some of the bearings

I wonder which came first, the contaminated oil chicken or the knackered bearing egg

Looks pretty sad all round though. On the bright side if it didn't spin a main bearing the block should go again although the quality job suggests it will need a thorough measuring

That pulley holding tool made me giggle.

Out of interest, was it an amateur build or a garage ?

I'm only surprised when a garage does a good job. I used to have the job of putting my sisters car right after it had been to a garage, now I do the lot.
After a clutch change in the lake district, she was having trouble getting gears so she drove it down the country to me. While coming down the motorway the front of the bonnet started flapping. Turns out they had tack welded the bonnet on and a weld had broken. The gearchange problem was down to them forgetting that part of an engine mount went on the gearbox bolts, so they just bent it out of the way rather than remove the 2 bolts.
