Post subject:  Hello :) - Blown Turbo

So I'm Dave. From Stamford (UK) and have just bought my first GT-Four :)

It's a 94 WRC ST205, purchased with a blown turbo and a bodged FMIC.

I'll correct the bad bits, replace the broke bits, and clean it up and use it.

Here's a shot of what we found when we took the turbo off

Here's the car as I found it

It'd been stood a year. Jump started, but smoked a lot.

I'll need new discs and pads, and the turbo stuff sorted.

I'm also planning to fit an Evo 7/8 FMIC in place of the bar and plate one that's currently fitted (and over-sized IMO) and carry out an Air Con delete to save some weight and because I don't use Airconditioning in cars (it gives me respiratory issues).

Hi Dave

I take it you didn't remove the turbine from that turbo

If you're not going to switch fmic immediately I would consider removing what's there and giving it a thorough petrol clean out. Good chance there's some bits of compresssor wheel/housing in there

Hi & welcome.

I have a turbo that looks just like that on my shelf from my 185. It left a nice smokescreen on the A30 from the point it went until the next layby  . Compressor side was unharmed so the engine survived (a bit longer).

Thanks all

The cold side looks fine. Oddly.

No, I didn't cause it. I bought it like this :), bought as "smokes a lot, unknown fault". It was cheap enough to warrant it :).

I'll take the exhaust off and check to see what's in there.. but I doubt anything is left of the turbine wheel. They shatter at the speed of failure and tend to just spit out of the exhaust in a load of pieces.

The FMIC and pipework is getting a thorough clean out, don't worry. :)

Hi, the company I work for specialises in turbo rebuilds. Worth a call to see what we could do if your considering options about turbo.

Welcome to the DC Dave! Looks like a JDM ST205 going by the square number plates (and no sunroof?) You mention some of the mods but I would guess the previous owner(s) ran a boost controller at the very least. Have you had a good look to see what other mods have been carried out e.g. fuel, timing, ECU?

I've never seen a turbine shaft snap like that so it makes me wonder what caused it to fail in the first place. If it were my car I'd want to do a bit more investigation before bolting on a new/rebuilt turbo. The lubrication system would be a prime candidate for a forensic investigation followed by a thorough clean. Quite challenging to do thoroughly with the engine in the car.

When mine went it was round a long sharp corner and I was travelling quite fast round it. I suspect oil surge, especially as I noticed start up big end rattle a few months later.

Previous owner didn't know a lot about the car and tried to up the boost too much.

I've done a compression test, that's come back OK.

And yes it's a JDM WRC :)

It's fitted with a Greddy SpecII B EBC, front mounted stainless steel intercooler, and an HKS pillar mounted boost gauge.

Other than that, the engine is fairly stock.

There's an AEM FIC-6 in my stash ready to go on once I'm happy it's a strong engine, and I'll look at larger injectors and fueling/turbo upgrades as appropriate.

Speaking of turbo.

I've an industrial garrett in my box of spares

It's from Cat/Perkins 6.0 diesel. Twin entry T3 housing, 0.68 hot side trim, 0.48 coldside trim, 71mm entry.

Based on the GT3571S :)

I'm currently looking into using it..or selling it and having my core turned into something.

Hi Dave, I hope you don't mind me moving your thread to Modifications but there's quite a lot of useful info and background. Posts in the Greetings section are automatically nuked after a few weeks and it would be a shame to lose your thread.
