Post subject:  Mapped Apexi Power FC results

Got my Apexi Power FC fitted and Mapped last Tuesday 31st July by Ryan from 2bar Tuning as Surrey rolling road.

He also set up the Apexi AVC-R at the same time.

Mode A is at 1 bar and mode B is 1.2 bar.

Still not getting the power he expected though.

Still miles better and puts a smile on my face :D :D :D

Here are the graphs.

Any thoughts?

Looks good. Are you happy with results?

Yes, it is great, not sure about fuel consumption yet as I have leak in the tank when full.

Just off to get another one :D

Well mine improved fuel consumption, did 340 odd miles over friday and sataday, and 4 hard runs at santapod, with 60 quid in tank, worked out at 17p per mile!

You have the cat in still?

Is it a standard turbo?

He has hybrid turbo, unsure of cat situation.

is it a 185 or a 205? would of thought higher numbers with a hybrid on a 205 with power fc

It's a 205. Forgot to check for cat.

I'm personally a bit worried about the lack of safety margin on the fueling. If the air temperature correction isn't quite right, or if the fuel gets hot stood in the sun (no fuel temp correction) could result in the mixture running lean. Also, supermarket petrol contains a few % Ethanol which will weaken the mixture slightly. I've generally aimed for about 11 - 11.5 on boost when mapping my own, for the few BHP and MPG lost it's worth it not to blow the engine IMO.

I've just driven it and found 2 drivability problems.

Driven with digital throttle (full or off) or cruising it's fine.

1. When slowly applying throttle after overrun the engine gives a huge jerk before picking up. To me it feels like hitting the windscreen then getting thrown back in the seat, but the thrown forward could just be me bracing for power then not getting it.
I would suspect this is related to acceleration enrichment (is this settable on the PFC ?) or possibly wrongly adjusted throttle position sensor and overrun fuel cut dropping out too late.

2. If slowly letting off throttle from full boost, the car starts kangarooing very hard almost as soon as the pedal starts coming up.
I'm really not sure what setting in the map could cause this unless the cells just below full boost are mapped to something stupid. Knowing there is also a low boost setting, I would doubt this.
Other possibility is that the boost controller sensing is taken from the manifold rather than the turbo side of the throttle. This could cause the boost controller to shut the wastegate as the manifold pressure starts dropping. I've suggested moving the sensor T piece into the pipe from the back of the chargecooler to see if this cures it.

Would be interested to hear other peoples opinions & experience.

Hmm, the symptoms are similar to the original mapping on my MoTeC M4 equipped ST205. I can't recall the detail but essentially the map had too few load points under 2k rpm. After more detailed mapping this smoothed out the low rpm on/off throttle response. It still wasn't perfect though.

I have the kangerooing effect in 1st when letting off the throttle. This only started after having it mapoed by ryan with apexi.

Nibbles - if you are coming past I can lend you a datalogit or I can post it to you.

I had similar issues when first mapping my Power Fc and ended up smoothing the map and changing the fuel over run cut off points. IIRC the issue described in point 1 of yours is probably more to do with when the injectors are turned back on to catch the engine from stalling.

I think most of Ryans maps are a generic base map of his with tweaks to full boost areas for each car. For the money he charges it is good value but it is not an ideal way of mapping IMHO. Unfortunately the price people are willing to pay dictates the service he can provide.

Accel enrichment is within the Datalogit software as adjustable but as with most settings is rarely changed. I suspect it is either fuel cut related or odd timing settings at high vacuum parts of the map.

Are you still on the mechanical boost control Jon ?

Are you going to rallyday JP ? If so, the car will be there then - in fact both will.

It makes me wonder if Ryans base map has accidentally had some of the 'not normally changed' settings corrupted. It's easy enough to make a change to try something then forget and save by accident.

As a matter of interest, I didn't notice any problems on Dans map, also done by Ryan, and I drove that car a fair bit up in the lake district. If fact, it's Dans ECU now in Phils car as it's the 205 specific one with CC drive.

I too have datalogit that you're welcome to borrow at any time. I'll be back in Tosh Wednesday and happy to drop off at Chris's workshop

I had similar symptoms after my initial mapping session on my Motec. But It was more noticeable on shift. Shift fast and WOT would result in a pause. A small stutter then the revs would pick up as normal. Adrian mentioned acceleration enrichment also. I believe it was too much fuel.

We settled on a nice rich safe map.
