Our cars have gearbox oil coolers and most of us upgrade the oil cooler.
But are we over cooling the oil esp in winter?
Is there an inline thermostat we can use to regulate the oil temp?
Then again, what's the optimum oil temp for gearbox oil?

I don't know if the OEM gearbox oil cooler has any kind of thermostatic control but I doubt it. Most aftermarket coolers are fitted with a wax type of thermostat but they are pretty crude and I know most of the guys who have fitted aftermarker engine oil coolers have seen pretty low oil temps both in the winter and during heavy rain. The most pragmatic solution is to fit a blanking plate covering some or all of the cooler matrix. I did fit a gearbox oil temp sensor on Stormy Blue but I didn't do much running before the engine blew up at Bruntingthorpe :-( so it was a bit inconclusive. I would fit a temp sensor and see what you are running before deciding what to do.

Was wondering if something like this would do as in auto boxes, the temp is usually about the same as engine temp.
