Yep from my very poor turbo knowledge the GT2871 seems a great turbo for 350-400 but I wanted to not work the turbo and engine quite so hard in trying to get there, and maybe even have a little head room if things don't quite go according to plan

Haven't seen the 2871 without an internal wastegate yet? Think that an external gate is the way forward as it will allow better control of the turbo?

The beginnings of finding out what can and cannot be done with some "stuff" ... A GT3071 will fit and can be clocked to a stock manifold, providing an adaptor is used The turbo, (by measurement), will fit between the block and a Koyo rad, but you won't be able to use the stock fans, no way there will be enough room! A 38mm Tial wastegate only just doesn't fit! The side of the wastegate fouls on the heatshield for the manifold, (no problem a small bend sorts that), but it just doesn't quite sit true to the flange due to just touching on the oil/water cooler. This is very close and maybe removing a little material from the side of the wastegate would cure this...

Kris, I'd have thought you really want the wastegate mounted in a more conventional position on the front of the adaptor? That way you won't have any clearance issues and it will be out in the cool(er) air. Also, isn't a 38mm wastegate a bit tichy for a GT3071?

Nice turbo...might get one of those myself Ive been advised a 44mm wastegate is more ideally suited to that turbo. Better at sustaining low boost would you believe in switchable applications (i asked as i was intending on having two levels of boost) hth

What sort of power are you aiming for Kris? I had a very interesting convo with the bloke from Turbo Dynamics regarding turbos at TOTB. I asked about 350-400hp and fast response and he suggested a GT2871 or possibly custom made GT2869. With the 3071 I'd assume you're after mid to high 400's?

IIRC teh Stock Garrett turbo has a wastegate built in of 34mm. Agree 3071 shoudl see 450 plus depending on which 3071 it is!

Talking to the TD lad (wish I could remember his name ), he said, aiming for 350-400 but with massive torque spread and basically aiming for response, the GT2871 would be good. He mentioned maybe even a GT2869, custom built. Both are internally gated. With the GT2871 he'd recommend leaving the exhaust cam alone and fitting a slightly longer duration inlet cam.

Kris as i have said to you already,this turbo will be well sorted to what you want to achieve.the ex waste gate will ideal also for your power requirement. Go for it kris you know it makes sence. Hutch xxxxx

Hutch, don't you know Kris has to go through the full loop before eventually deciding what he's doing I've been badgering him for ages to go for this sort of spec but having said that he'll probably go off and buy some sort of chocolate turbo/WG/manifold (delete as appropriate )
